World Singles & Doubles Kicks Off Extended IRT Season with Historic Victory

The 2025–2026 extended International Racquetball Tour (IRT) season officially continues with a bang at the World Doubles & Singles Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Hosted at the Highlands Ranch Northridge Rec Center, this year’s event drew over 300 participants and brought together the heart of the racquetball community—including more than 15 Hall of Fame legends in attendance.

The tournament was spearheaded by Dr. James Hiser, a true pioneer of the sport and one of the first to organize large-scale racquetball events across the country. His vision and dedication set the stage for an unforgettable opening to the season.

Acuña Makes History

The spotlight of the weekend belonged to Andrés Acuña, who captured his first-ever IRT full-ranking title in stunning fashion. Facing off against the legendary Kane Waselenchuk, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, Acuña delivered the match of his career, winning 15–14, 15–6 in the championship final.

This victory marks not only Acuña’s first win over Waselenchuk but also a historic milestone for Costa Rica, as he becomes the first player from the country to win a full IRT Pro Stop.

The Road to the Title

Acuña’s path to glory was anything but easy:

  • Round of 32: Def. José Cáceres – 15–4, 15–9
  • Round of 16: Def. Diego García – 15–5, 15–6 (avenging a recent World Games loss)
  • Quarterfinals: Def. Javier Mar – 15–9, 15–5
  • Semifinals: Def. Gerson Miranda – 7–15, 15–13, 11–3 (his toughest battle of the week)
  • Finals: Def. Kane Waselenchuk – 15–14, 15–6

In the final, Acuña played lights-out, showcasing relentless serving and precision shot-making that left the crowd in awe.
