Kane Waselenchuk Secures Year-End #1 as Pro Nationals Delivers Upsets and Breakout Performances

The International Racquetball Tour’s Pro Nationals in Missoula, Montana proved to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable tournaments of the season. With a draw full of rising talent and top-level competition, the event showcased both the depth of the tour and the continued dominance at the very top.

From the Round of 16 onward, the tournament was defined by upsets, breakthroughs, and unforgettable moments.

Breakout Moments in the Round of 16

The Round of 16 was where the tournament truly opened up.

Diego Gastelum delivered one of the biggest wins of his career, defeating #5 ranked Rodrigo Montoya in a thrilling three-game match. Gastelum had been knocking on the door all season, consistently pushing top players to the limit — and in Missoula, he broke through. The victory marked his first career win over a Top 5 player and his first appearance in an IRT quarterfinal.

Erick Trujillo produced one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament. Facing #4 Andres Acuna, Trujillo found himself down 10-4 in the tiebreaker before mounting an incredible comeback to win 11-10. Point after point, Trujillo defended and extended rallies, turning the match around in one of the most exciting finishes of the weekend.

Quarterfinals: New Faces Step Forward

The momentum carried into the quarterfinals.

Kane Waselenchuk continued his dominant form, defeating #9 seed Adam Manilla in convincing fashion to advance.

In the battle of rising talent, Erick Trujillo defeated Diego Gastelum 11-7 in the tiebreaker, securing his place in his first-ever IRT semifinal.

Meanwhile, Jhonatan Flores continued his impressive run, defeating Jake Bredenbeck in a tightly contested match 14-15, 15-8, 11-8. With this win, Flores has now taken his last two matchups against Bredenbeck, further establishing himself as a rising force on tour.

Semifinals: Experience vs Momentum

In the semifinals, experience met momentum.

Kane Waselenchuk put an emphatic end to Trujillo’s incredible run, winning 15-0, 15-4 to advance to the final. The performance was a reminder of Kane’s ability to elevate his level when it matters most.

On the other side of the draw, Conrrado Moscoso faced Jhonatan Flores in what is quickly becoming one of the most exciting matchups on tour. Flores surprised Moscoso by taking the first game 15-11, but Moscoso responded like a seasoned champion, winning the next two games 15-8, 11-7 to secure his place in the final.

While Moscoso holds the edge for now, Flores continues to close the gap — and this rivalry is one to watch for years to come.

Finals: Kane Closes the Door

In the championship match, Kane Waselenchuk once again proved why he remains at the top of the sport.

After building an early lead in game one, it briefly looked like another dominant performance might unfold. Moscoso found moments of success with strong drive serves and defensive scrambling, but Kane maintained control throughout the match.

With a composed and efficient performance, Kane secured the victory and claimed the Pro Nationals title.
