Jhonatan Flores Wins First IRT Title at Wild PapaNicholas Shamrock Shootout
The PapaNicholas Shamrock Shootout once again proved why it’s considered one of the premier tournaments on the International Racquetball Tour calendar.
Held annually during St. Patrick’s Day weekend in the Chicago area, the event has become a favorite for players and fans alike. Over the years it has hosted many of the sport’s greatest champions, and this year continued that tradition with appearances from legendary players including Alvaro Beltran and Chicago racquetball favorite Tim Sweeney, who returned to watch on the courts where he developed his game.
But while the atmosphere and tradition were on full display, the real story of the weekend was the chaos inside the draw.
A Wide-Open Tournament
From the beginning, it became clear this would be one of the most unpredictable brackets of the season.
Several exciting early-round matches set the tone for the weekend, including a thrilling 11-10 tiebreaker victory by Cole Sendrey over Kadim Carrasco.
Meanwhile, Erick Trujillo continued his return from injury with a strong performance against Diego Gastelum, showing signs that he is regaining his form on tour.
The biggest shakeups began in the Round of 16, where multiple seeded players were eliminated.
Eduardo Portillo (#9) defeated Alan Natera (#8) in a three-game battle.
Jhonatan Flores (#11) once again proved his rising status by defeating Andree Parrilla (#6) in straight games.
And Adam Manilla (#10) upset Javier Mar (#7) in a dramatic comeback victory.
These results completely reshaped the bracket and set up a thrilling quarterfinal round.
Quarterfinal Shockers
The quarterfinals delivered several of the biggest moments of the tournament.
Kane Waselenchuk advanced past Eduardo Portillo, who unfortunately had to retire late in the first game due to an ankle injury.
Jake Bredenbeck continued his strong play with a convincing victory over Rodrigo Montoya, winning 15-8, 15-6.
Meanwhile, Jhonatan Flores followed up his upset over Parrilla with another impressive win over Andres Acuna, taking the match 15-12, 15-1.
But perhaps the most shocking result of the tournament came when Adam Manilla defeated Conrrado Moscoso, ending Moscoso’s winning streak and earning Manilla his first career win over Moscoso on the IRT Tour.
Semifinal Surprises
The semifinals continued the theme of unpredictability.
In the top half of the draw, Jake Bredenbeck stunned Kane Waselenchuk, defeating the legend 15-8, 15-12 with aggressive serving and precise shot making.
In the bottom semifinal, Adam Manilla faced Jhonatan Flores in a tightly contested match. Flores captured game one, Manilla forced a tiebreaker, but Flores regained control in the breaker to reach his first career IRT final.
Flores Makes History
The championship match between Jake Bredenbeck and Jhonatan Flores was a battle worthy of the tournament’s reputation.
Bredenbeck started strong, jumping out to an early 8–2 lead before Flores battled back to keep the game close. Jake ultimately closed the first game 15-12.
Flores responded with a dominant performance in game two, winning 15-7 to force a tiebreaker.
The final game was neck-and-neck until the closing points, when Flores pulled away to win 11-8, capturing the biggest victory of his young career.
A Rising Star
With the victory, Jhonatan Flores becomes one of the youngest players in history to win a full-ranking IRT event before the age of 21, placing his name alongside many of the legends of the sport.
For fans watching the tournament unfold, it was clear that the young Bolivian star has the potential to become a major force on the professional tour.
What’s Next for the IRT
The IRT now takes a short break as players prepare to compete in the IRF Pan American Championships in Guatemala.
The tour returns April 16-19 for the Players Championship in Southern California, hosted by racquetball legend Rocky Carson.
With more than 145 players already registered and over 200 expected, the event is shaping up to be one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
